Breaking: Stephen Bannon steps down at Breitbart News after Trump feud

"Steve Bannon and I. We both ended up pissing off a lot of people".

- Reuters picNEW YORK, Jan 10 - Steve Bannon has stepped down as executive chairman of Breitbart News, the right-wing news website said yesterday, after he drew fire from President Donald Trump for comments that harshly criticised Trump's eldest son.

Most likely, you had an opinion about a year ago, when Donald Trump was sworn in as our 45 President. Under his watch, Breitbart News was seen as strongly pro-Israel, with a dedicated Jerusalem bureau.

He said people in the White House talk about it constantly.

The departure had been widely rumored and anticipated since Bannon was quoted in author Michael Wolff 's new book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, which was critical of President Trump.

Bannon's public roasting isn't just fun. In Washington, Bannon works and lives part time in a town house nicknamed theBreitbart Embassy. "When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind", Trump said.

"He is absolutely no different than the day he got elected, and he has used this unconventional but very effective manner of managing for the 30 years that I've known him in business, finance, media and now governing", Thomas J. Barrack Jr., Trump's longtime friend and inauguration chairman, said in an interview Monday. "Once that coffin's close, it shouldn't be opened".

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been", he wrote.

Trump has lashed out at Bannon for comments made in an explosive new book that questions the president's fitness for office. "So, is this fake news?" the man asked.

"Fox News will not be hiring Steve Bannon", a network spokesperson told TheWrap Tuesday.

Some Trump allies voiced frustration that the White House does not appear to have implemented a full-scale crisis communications plan.

"The Mercer family, Robert Mercer, had been a major funder, had sold his stake in November in Breitbart to his daughter Rebekah Mercer, who remained one of the owners, issued a statement saying "the writing was on the wall".

Bannon said the comments in the book were not accurate. Trump followed that advice in the wake of Charlottesville, and ever since, he's been so toxic that Bannon's plans for a "left-right" protectionist alliance have evaporated. Five days later, Bannon was out.

Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have since traded threats of war and crude insults, as the North conducted nuclear and long-range missile tests. Trump will bring his "America First" agenda to the forum on free trade and globalization.

Before joining the administration, Bannon was CEO of the Trump campaign, and his appointment as strategist and senior counselor to the president drew massive criticism because of Bannon's history of ultra-conservative views. In August 2016, Bannon was appointed as chief executive of then-candidate Trump's campaign. It would have been natural for White House aides to conclude, based on Wolff's coverage, that his book would turn out to be a favorable one.

FOLKENFLIK: Well, Bannon has liked to describe himself as something of a revolutionary.
