"While we believe that AMD's processor architectures make it difficult to exploit Variant 2, we continue to work closely with the industry on this threat".

So, presumably pre-Haswell processors aren't hit. "If this requires a revised firmware update from Intel, we will distribute that update through the normal channels".

"Security is job number one for Intel and our industry, " Krzanich said during an industry trade show earlier this week.

A precise release date for the microcode updates has yet to be provided.

Unfortunately, any device that uses processors that have the flaw will eventually need to be patched.

The firm added that workloads that are graphic and compute intensive (such as gaming and financial analysis respectively) will impact performance very minimally. Although there has been no public report of a successful mass attack campaign using the vulnerabilities, there have been a few proof-of-concept attack vectors that have been successful in the lab, called Spectre and Meltdown. It involves placing dozens of True VR cameras around the stadium, thereby giving you real-time volumetric data of game, as it's happening. That's across PCMark 10, SYSmark 2014 SE and 3DMark benchmarks.

As this is a dynamic situation with lots of unanswered questions, information is being compiled and we will be emailing anyone who wants suggestions once all of the updates have been clearly articulated. Making sure your anti-virus program has updated your system is a critical first step (check the support website for your program). We expect this issue to be corrected shortly and Microsoft should resume updates for these older processors by next week.

Microsoft has temporarily stopped fixing a serious security flaw on personal computers powered by certain chips from Advanced Micro Devices because the repair is crippling the affected machines. More simply, the design flaws are rooted within the processor's architecture where a design defect allows applications to cross memory boundaries into the protected memory of other applications.

The company said it would make optional microcode updates available for Ryzen and Epyc CPUs starting this week, with updates for older processors due to arrive in the 'coming weeks'.
