It is the second major incident to rock the heavily fortified DMZ after a North Korean guard was shot trying to flee the communist nation.

The soldier bolted from a guard post at the northern side of Panmunjom village in the Joint Security Area to the southern side of the village, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

Seo said that at around 3:14 p.m. on Monday, the JCS spotted three North Korean soldiers moving south of the Panmungak, or the North's main building in the Joint Security Area.

"We sent three of the largest aircraft carriers in the world (to the Korean Peninsula) and a nuclear submarine is also positioned", the American president warned Pyongyang soon after he landed in South Korea.

It said an investigation into Monday's event was ongoing.

North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test this year and test-fired a series of advanced missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles. It is located inside the 4-kilometer-wide (2 1/2-mile-wide) Demilitarized Zone, which forms the de facto border between the Koreas since the Korean War. He feared the long and difficult journey - typically covering hundreds of miles across tough terrain - was too dangerous for his wife and child, a decision he now bitterly regrets.

The North's official media haven't reported the case as of Tuesday afternoon.

Two American soldiers also were killed in the DMZ by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers in a 1976 brawl over an attempt to trim a poplar tree.

It gives Lee some hope as does a speech to South Korea's parliament by U.S. President Donald Trump last week where he listed North Korea's human rights abuses saying the country "is a hell no person deserves".

South Korea's military is keeping its full combat readiness against North Korea's possible provocations as the North's soldiers are preparing for their monthslong winter training, the South's military said Monday.

It was the first shooting in the Joint Security Area since 1984, but U.S. and South Korean forces did not return fire.

There was no immediate comment on the incident from North Korea.

Rex Tillerson, the secretary of state, was photographed by North Korean soldiers while he stood inside one of the huts during a visit to the DMZ in March. He then fled across the JSA, with fellow soldiers chasing and firing at him, South Korea's military said, citing unspecified surveillance systems installed in the area.
