Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri should be an"alarm call to the world about Iran's ambitions

Hezbollah's close ties to Iran and its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his war with rebels have been a major source of tension in Lebanon for years.

The resignation of Hariri, or sacking by his Saudi sponsors, should sound the alarm bells for any government that doesn't want to see another war erupt in the region. Nasrallah heavily hinted that the message was dictated to Hariri by Saudi Arabia and that the words the Hariri used did not reflect the language of the Lebanese prime minister.

I don't really have anything special to say about this, other than the fact that all four of these conflicts are actually fights or proxy fights with Iran.

"We cannot but be sad over Lebanon's situation due to Hezbollah". A Saudi envoy recently went to the Syrian city of Raqqa, newly retaken from IS, to discuss a Saudi role in reconstruction.

Hariri's coalition, which took office last year, grouped nearly all of Lebanon's main parties, including Hezbollah.

"What happened was Saudi madness and we'll wait and see what happens over the next few days", Nasrallah told his associates. Such an attack would also provide a perfect opportunity for the West to test the new Saudi leadership's "moderate" credentials: Would it cheer Israel on?

"The Saudis felt that Hariri was not delivering and that Hezbollah and Iran were using [the governing arrangement] for their interest", said Shavit.

By ordering Hariri to step down, the Saudis may be trying to create chaos in Lebanon in the hopes this will harm Hezbollah, Shavit said.

Hariri then headed an anti-Syrian bloc to victory in 2005 legislative elections, eventually serving as prime minister intermittently throughout 2017.

Aides to Hariri, whose family made their fortune in the Saudi construction industry, strongly denied he had been detained or had been forced to resign.

"The United Nations remains committed to supporting the security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon", the statement concluded. Iran's military is larger and more battle-hardened than Saudi Arabia's, but the kingdom has far more advanced weaponry bought from the U.S. and Europe in the past decade. Aoun must appoint the candidate with most support among MP's, who he is expected to consult in the coming days. But it has succeeded in killing thousands of innocent people, displacing millions, and helping Tehran position itself as the defender of the oppressed in the Middle East. Removing the head of the National Guard and a one-time contender to the throne is an obvious play to consolidate power by Bin Salman. When Saudi Arabia sealed Qatar's only land border, it looked toward Iran and Turkey to fill the gap.
