San Antonio Stars announce move to Las Vegas

Without specifying the potential Las Vegas buyer, Spurs Sports & Entertainment sent out a message to fans on Twitter,?offering its "deepest gratitude" to team employees and fans while saying the organization and the WNBA have been in negotiations with a buyer to purchase and relocate the Stars.

The report states the WNBA's San Antonio Stars owner is in the final stages of selling the franchise to an anonymous buyer. The only thing left for the sale and relocation to be a go is a final approval from both the WNBA and NBA.

"On behalf of Spurs Sports & Entertainment ownership, management, and staff, we are all very thankful to the wonderful Stars fans, season ticket members and corporate partners who have supported the team over the last 15 years", the statement read in part.

Earlier this year, Spurs Sports and Entertainment submitted an application for expansion by Major League Soccer. This obviously includes the NBA's San Antonio Spurs.

The Stars franchise was one of the original eight in the WNBA but was initially located in Utah and called the Starzz. The Stars missed the playoffs last season with the worst record in the league, going 8-26 despite landing Kelsey Plum with the first pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft. The team moved to San Antonio for the 2003 season, and named the Silver Stars before being shorted to just Stars.

San Antonio was 16-18 that year; the Stars' last winning record came in 2012, when they were 21-13. The Las Vegas Golden Knights are currently in the midst of their inaugural season.

Information from The Associated Press and ESPN's Mechelle Voepel was used in this report.
