For the last couple of seasons, the brand new Hybrid engines that Renault built were very uncompetitive against the newer and quicker Mercedes power plants, and in the opening season with the engines in 2014, there were many malfunctions that made team manager Christian Horner furious against the French company, causing Red Bull to either pull out of the deal or Formula One altogether.

Ricciardo is understandably nervous about the merger as Honda engines are regarded as "the worst on the track", according to The Times.

However, an announcement on Fernando Alonso's future at McLaren is likely to be delayed beyond the weekend, with the final dotting of i's still to be concluded.

Only in Formula One, and motor racing in general, is an athlete expected to beat and work alongside the same person - his team-mate.

This follows the launch of Red Bull's recent Singlish challenge video, where the duo attempted to guess phrases such as "catch no ball", "kan cheong spider" and "fly aeroplane".

The race, which will remain 60 percent funded by the government, costs some S$150mn ($111.58mn) to put on every year but Industry Minister Iswaran said that would be going down to S$135mn a year.

The Singapore street circuit is believed to best suit Ferrari as Sebastian Vettel aims to reclaim the championship lead from Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. Then they used a chair and a squeaky chicken before resorting to throwing it on the floor.

Renault, which now has its own factory team, and Red Bull won four successive drivers' and constructors' titles between 2010-13.

"I'm sure there's reason behind it and, obviously, faith they're going to get better - and there's probably some proof in the pudding somewhere - but for sure they'll need to show up next year". I think we've got a good package.

Force India decided to implement team orders after the race, with chief operating officer Otmar Szafnauer saying "if they can't sort themselves out then we'll have to do it for them". It has also contributed S$1.4bn in tourism receipts to Singapore over the past decade and drawn over 450,000 international visitors, including projected arrivals for this year's race. There will be further developments with that but that doesn't relate to the engine.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) attempted to ban the use of team orders in 2002, but the sport's governing body retracted the ban in 2011 as teams were continuing to find ways around the rule.
