Marlins trade reliever Phelps

Hernandez was the Mariners' #6 prospect, per MLB Pipeline.

Sandoval technically will not be free to agree to a deal with a team until 1 p.m. EDT on Friday upon clearing waivers.

Phelps will work as a setup man in Seattle ahead of Edwin Diaz, while the Marlins were able to provide a boost to their farm system.

The Boston Red Sox released Sandoval on Wednesday when the third baseman didn't report after being designated for assignment last week. Vincent has been particularly effective this season, posting a 2.04 ERA in 39 2/3 innings pitched. The 19-year-old is currently playing in the Low-A minor leagues.

In San Francisco, he delivered in October.

With the Trade Deadline still 11 days away, Dipoto likely isn't done. The organization asked him to take on a number of different roles, and he has performed each without a hitch. Granted, both could just be victims of cold streaks but if Dipoto is intent on adding a reliever, the fact that he's settling for Phelps is just plain and simple desperation.

The deconstruction of the Miami Marlins' theoretical super bullpen has begun.

In one of the moves expected to be made before the trade deadline, the Marlins have reached an agreement to send reliever David Phelps to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday in exchange for four prospects.

Miami will receive outfielder Brayan Hernandez and pitchers Brandon Miller, Pablo Lopez, Lucas Schiraldi in the deal. Phelps has a 3.45 ERA in 47 innings this season with 51 strikeouts.

"This is something we hoped we could have avoided", president of baseball operations Michael Hill said.

Closer A.J. Ramos is also a target of trade talk.

Phelps has been one of the Miami Marlins best arms out of the bullpen.

And yet the Mariners are at a stage where they have to be bold. He's a six-year veteran with 64 career starts.

Hernandez originally signed with the Mariners in 2014 for $1.85M. Spending three seasons in New York to begin his major league tenure, Phelps has since converted to more of a full-time relief pitcher during his time in Miami. He can pitch anywhere from some point in the sixth, seventh, eighth inning.

Maybe Dipoto would have tried to buy regardless of the Mariners performance in the opening week after the All-Star Break, but after a successful roadtrip, Dipoto's move makes even more sense. And guess who's coming to dinner for four games at Safeco? The fact that Phelps is under club control through 2018 was the piece de resistance. He'll be assigned to the Marlins' short-season Single-A affiliate in Batavia.
